Overview

Personality Disorders are self-destructive behaviour patterns that present low self-esteem, avoidance of life’s challenges, feelings of failure, hopelessness and despair, and a false sense of self that either attempts to deflate or inflate its own being to maintain some level of emotional regulation. The role of the therapist is to help the client gain some level of understanding of themselves, through identifying the unmet needs in their past and develop them in their relationships, life decisions, life purpose and autonomy through the use of verified approaches, techniques and models.

This one-day CPD Certificate in Understanding Personality Disorders in Counselling explores the current DSM-5 and ICD-11 descriptions of personality disorders and how they can help the counsellor understand and identify mild, moderate and severe presentations. Approaches are explored to help counsellors support the client’s Real Self, help them re-connect with their needs, instincts and emotions and apply some useful DBT techniques. Individual reflection, group tasks, case conceptualisation and guided learning provides a supportive and interactive approach for the day.
